2026 courses at Higher Spargo - a unique centre for art
Last year saw the launch of the Higher Spargo School of Art, marking a new chapter in the life of this working farm and long-established creative community in the heart of Cornwall. Since then, the yard, fields and studios have continued their quiet rhythms, shaped by seasons, making, and conversation.
Over the winter months, while the farm weathered wind and rain, we have been working behind the scenes to shape an expanded programme of courses for 2026. In doing so, we’ve formed new relationships, deepened existing ones, and come to see the Spargo landscape and its creative potential afresh.
Returning once again are our two flagship sculpture courses led by Tim Shaw RA, taking place in July. We are also pleased to welcome back Carlos Zapata, resident in the Yard Studios, who will offer an introduction to wood carving rooted in his distinctive, deceptively simple approach. Fellow sculptor and print maker Ollie Clifton-Bligh will lead a course in woodblock printmaking, exploring image, pattern, and process through this direct and tactile medium.
Our resident ceramicist, Hannah Lawrence, will run a series of evening classes alongside a weekend teapot workshop, sharing her highly personal pinch-pottery techniques developed through years of practice and travel. Life drawing also returns in early summer with Emily Roberts, whose evening classes offer a grounded and attentive approach to drawing the figure. Emily’s much-loved natural inks and life-drawing course will be offered again in both summer and autumn, taking advantage of the changing seasons and the opportunity to forage materials directly from the farm.
We are proud to be working with such a thoughtful and generous group of artists and tutors. As we look ahead to 2026, we are excited to welcome back participants from last year, alongside many new faces, all contributing to the evolving Spargo community.
