2-Day Automata Course with Carlos Zapata

Make Wooden Automata with Carlos Zapata

Over two days design and make a carved wooden mechanical figure or object, and a simple wire mechanism to bring it to life.

After an introduction to Carlos’s work and processes, you will start to create your own automaton – a mechanical sculpture. On day one, using simple materials and tools you will apply basic mechanical principles to design both the mechanism and the figure or object to automate. After a convivial group lunch you will be tutored to make your automaton using modelling tools and mechanical band saw, scroll saw, pillar drill and belt sander, continuing through the second day. Carlos and his technician will guide and support you throughout the process, including how to use the tools, with the aim of you taking home a finished automaton.

The course will start on Friday evening with a drinks reception, and then run from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
