Week one: Introduction
In this faster paced, introductory session we will work from shorter poses, pushing the experimental. Our aim will be to discuss each member of the group’s experience and practice, so that we can hone the sessions, ensuring that each person gains from the programme
Week two: Proportion and contour
Following some initial warm up drawings we will concentrate on longer poses, allowing time to measure proportion and explore the contour of the figure. We will discuss various ways of seeing and the visual approach
Week three: Shadow and tone
After a discussion on form, light and shade we will begin to look for shadow line and tonal range in our life drawings, moving quickly to some longer poses to practice the observation of shadow and placement of tone.
Week four: Mid tones and transitions
In this session we will discuss how shadow moves into light shape, edge variations and how anatomy can be accentuated by mid tone. We will practice various methods for describing tonal transition and how treatment of edges can accentuate composition.
Week five: The portrait
Putting all of the methods for observation we have learnt so far in to practice we will work on the portrait, breaking the face down in to contour, light shape and shadow shape, as well as covering methods for approaching portraiture
Week six: Long pose for anatomy
In this first of two sequential sessions we will create a long pose tonal study, honing proportion, contour and tone. This will be used as the basis for next week’s anatomical overlay
Week seven: Anatomical overlay
Using layers of tracing paper, a skeleton and anatomy books we will use our long pose drawing to lay first the skeletal structure of the pose and then some of the muscles over the figure drawing.
Week eight: Gesture
As we hone our ability to observe accurately sometimes the push and pull of the pose can be lost. In this session, we will bring our newly honed skills to a faster paced practice, accentuation movement and gesture.
